DAILY BRIEFING/

New open weights, a coding harness, and harder agent evals

Reflection releases Beam weights and Mirror; Meta's October 15 Muse checkpoint joins the radar. New research probes ambiguous delivery and selective agent escalation.

Repositories to try

Open-source projects with a concrete reason to pay attention.

The license badges apply to the linked software. Model providers, commercial agents and hosted services may have separate access requirements and costs.

Auditable terminal coding agent

reflection-oss/mirror

16 Oct · Public betaNew open-source coding harnessApache-2.0

A coding agent that reads repositories, edits code and runs commands with approvals and isolated worktrees.

What’s new

Released alongside Beam's October 16 open-weight ecosystem, with a Python interface and Rust agent core.

Why it matters

Gives engineers an inspectable coding harness and manual approvals; manual mode is not an execution sandbox.

Try it

Install the CLI with uv and prepare a failing-test fixture; optional model repair only using previously authorized zero-cost inference.

03

Beyond the coding window

Context, execution and the infrastructure around agents.

Dependency license compliance reaches enterprise GA

Enterprise rules can reject pull requests adding packages with disallowed open-source licenses.

What’s new

GitHub shipped centralized policies, change audit logging and an API for coding agents to check package license rules.

Why it matters

Agents choosing dependencies can consult the same policy as reviewers instead of discovering compliance problems at merge time.

Only Enterprise Cloud repositories with Code Security. Not available in this project's free personal setup; no billing activated.

FDE-Gym: software delivery with vague requirements

FDE-Gym: The Last Mile of AI Delivery

Dongxu Yang and 25 coauthors

Benchmarks agent delivery in customer-like systems with ambiguous requirements and stakeholders.

Key finding

Authors report 95 tasks, 13 model configurations; best mean score 0.56, just 14 fully resolved at a strict success bar.

Why it matters

Test whether an agent discovers unstated requirements and improves customer outcomes, not just solves tickets.

Keep in mind

Scripted customers and simulated systems; not direct evidence of live production results.

LEASH: smarter escalation for computer-use agents

Qingni Wang, Changdae Oh, Yuzhe Yang, Sharon Li, Jiachen Yang, Ang Li, Xin Eric Wang

Routes a small agent to a stronger model on uncertainty signals, then monitors the stronger agent.

Key finding

In OSWorld, authors report 6.55–11.94-point gains over random escalation; one configuration reached 73.66% success at $0.4117/task.

Why it matters

Evaluate selective high-cost model use on both task success and cost rather than always choosing the largest model.

Keep in mind

Needs access to small-model hidden states and failure trajectories; benchmark-specific results and costs.

Try today’s experiment

One practical experiment from today’s briefing.

TODAY’S LAB · 20–35 minutes

Try reflection-oss/mirror: review a failing-test repair

Create a one-test Python bug fixture; inspect Mirror CLI and its manual approvals; optionally assess its fix.

Why it helps Use test output and Git diffs rather than trusting an agent's success claim.

Open the step-by-step guide
  1. 01

Build a disposable repository with a known failing Python test.

  2. 02

Install Mirror CLI and inspect its help without paying or invoking a model.

  3. 03

Optionally test a manual-approval repair only with already authorized no-charge inference.

Python 3, Git and uv on supported macOS/Linux; model key unnecessary for free baseline.

Sources reviewed for the 17 October edition; fixture, Git baseline and independent repair diff checked in a 19 October correction. Mirror installation and inference not run.
