# Try DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017: measure the checkpoint before downloading it

Open weights can be readable and reusable while still being far too large for your machine. This lab reads DeepSeek's published configuration and weight index, then writes a small footprint report. It does **not** download tensor shards or run inference.

## What you need

- Python 3 and internet access to the official Hugging Face repository.
- A disposable folder and approximately 10 MB of free space for two JSON files.
- No model key, account, GPU, new package, or paid service.

The model repository and weights are MIT-licensed. The pinned revision below is the publisher's `Release DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017` commit, `1bae0e1088993b9b82de08f59de5be5a34e42170`.

## 1. Create the workspace

```sh
mkdir deepseek-footprint-2026-10-19
cd deepseek-footprint-2026-10-19
```

## 2. Fetch metadata, never weights

Save this as `footprint.py`. It reads only two named JSON files and caps each response at 10 MB. It neither imports nor executes repository code.

```python
import hashlib
import json
from pathlib import Path
from urllib.request import Request, urlopen
revision = '1bae0e1088993b9b82de08f59de5be5a34e42170'
base = ('https://huggingface.co/deepseek-ai/'
        'DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017/resolve/' + revision + '/')
documents = {}
hashes = {}
for filename in ['config.json', 'model.safetensors.index.json']:
    request = Request(base + filename, headers={'User-Agent': 'AgentSignalFootprint/1.0'})
    with urlopen(request, timeout=30) as response:
        raw = response.read(10_000_001)
    if len(raw) > 10_000_000:
        raise RuntimeError('Unexpectedly large metadata; stopped before parsing')
    documents[filename] = json.loads(raw)
    hashes[filename] = hashlib.sha256(raw).hexdigest()
    Path(filename).write_bytes(raw)
config = documents['config.json']
index = documents['model.safetensors.index.json']
weight_bytes = index['metadata']['total_size']
report = {
    'revision': revision,
    'model_type': config['model_type'],
    'configured_context_positions': config['text_config']['max_position_embeddings'],
    'quantization': config['quantization_config'],
    'tensor_shard_files': len(set(index['weight_map'].values())),
    'indexed_weight_bytes': weight_bytes,
    'indexed_weight_GB': round(weight_bytes / 10**9, 2),
    'indexed_weight_GiB': round(weight_bytes / 2**30, 2),
    'metadata_sha256': hashes,
}
Path('footprint.json').write_text(json.dumps(report, indent=2) + '\n', encoding='utf-8')
print(json.dumps(report, indent=2))
```

Run it:

```sh
python3 footprint.py
```

## 3. Interpret the actual numbers

The pinned metadata returned these values in our 19 October check:

| Field | Observed value |
| --- | --- |
| Model type | `deepseek_v41` |
| Configured context positions | 1,048,576 |
| Distinct tensor shard files | 48 |
| Indexed tensor bytes | 510,286,023,000 |
| Decimal GB | 510.29 |
| Binary GiB | 475.24 |

The quantization configuration names FP8 and an FP4 expert dtype. Read the complete object rather than calling the entire checkpoint one uniform precision.

The index reports tensor data, not a purchase recommendation or an exact VRAM requirement. Inference also needs runtime memory, temporary buffers and a KV cache; parallelism, software support and quantization affect deployment. A configured context length also does not prove useful accuracy at that length.

## 4. Make a deployment decision

Create `decision.md` with three answers: how much local storage you have, whether the indexed tensors alone fit, and what information is still missing before you could run the model. An entirely reasonable result is **do not download this checkpoint**.

If you later choose a hosted API, it requires its own account, access and usage budget. That is outside this free metadata lab. Do not treat the model's release benchmarks as results from your machine.

## Troubleshooting

- DNS, HTTP or TLS failure: save the exact error and retry through a working connection. Do not disable certificate checks.
- A 404 or different JSON schema: check the pinned repository in a browser; stop rather than silently switching to another checkpoint.
- Missing `total_size`: do not estimate GPU fit from the filename or the parameter count. Record the absent data.
- Disk unexpectedly fills: this script names only two JSON files. Stop if another command starts fetching `.safetensors` shards.

## Scoring and tested status

One point each: pinned revision, metadata only, parsed shard/size values, distinction between tensor bytes and runtime memory, and a written go/no-go decision. This score measures your preflight, not model performance.

**Tested 19 October:** downloaded the pinned config and index; parsed model type, quantization, context, shard count and byte count with Python. The two JSON files total about 7.47 MB. The complete bounded-download script was also run. **Not tested:** weight download, loading, generation, tool use, benchmarks or hardware fit. No key, external package or paid inference was used.
